After 2,500 hours of research and study, 350,000 words edited down to 55,000 words for the Thesis of my PhD, I finished.
The work spanned survey work in the UK, India, the USA, Australia and across Africa.
The question was quite robust.
TO WHAT EXTENT DOES THE RISE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE CHALLENGE OR COMPLEMENT TRADITIONAL CHRISTIAN UNDERSTANDINGS OF DIVINE AGENCY, HUMAN PURPOSE, MORAL AND ETHICAL AUTHORITY.
The whole exercise has been very challenging, but also very insightful.
I've spoken with some of the largest companies in the world, politicians, psychologists, and faith leaders on four continents, and it's clear that no one is really ready for the future artificial intelligence will bring us all.
Having said that, I am so encouraged that in our faith, we have a relationship with God. I know I can pray to Him, I know He loves me, and I know He is the creator of the Universe, which, in our humanity, we have only seen as a speck of sand on His beach of creation.
It seems that humanity (His creation) continues to attempt to be God, to offer a secular alternative to the divine.
The Thesis is a bit heavy to read, and for a boy from the Welsh valleys, was something I never thought I would write or that would be accepted.
For those who prayed for me, gave me advice, across the medical, social, and political arenas - THANK YOU.
I came out of the process more interested in how we are 'Fearfully and Wonderfully Made', than whether AI will take humanity captive.
Our best is ahead of us as His creation.
